Turkish Airlines trains pilots on aircraft with Centurion engines
|
|
Lichtenstein/Saxony – Turkish Airlines has opted for an aircraft equipped with state-of-the-art Centurion engines. The airline transferred the Diamond DA42 Twin Star, which is equipped with two Centurion kerosene piston aircraft engines from Thielert Aircraft Engines GmbH, in mid-June 2007 from Wiener Neustadt in Austria to Istanbul in Turkey. In future, Turkish Airlines will be deploying the aircraft for the purpose of training prospective airline pilots and also familiarizing them at the same time with the reliability and safety of Centurion engines. The kerosene piston aircraft engines already have a proven track record at a number of flight schools such as American Flyer in the U.S., EPAG – Ecole de Pilotage Amaury de la Grange in France, Cabair in Great Britain, Flight Training Adelaide in Australia, CTC Aviation Group in New Zealand and Atlantic Flight Training in Great Britain.
Turkish Airlines, one of the ten largest airlines in the world, has opted for a Diamond DA42 Twin Star that is equipped with two state-of-the-art Centurion piston aircraft engines, and transferred the aircraft in mid-June 2007 from Wiener Neustadt in Austria to Istanbul. Last year, this airline was declared the fastest growing airline in Europe by the Association of European Airlines. To ensure this growth continues also in the future, pilots of the airline are to be trained in a comprehensive training program. This program now also allows the airline pilots to benefit from the modern "jet-like" diesel technology of the Centurion piston aircraft engines and to train on the DA42 Twin Star.
Besides their reliability and safety, the Centurion engines are notable – thanks to the redundant FADEC system (Full Authority Digital Engine Control) - for being particularly easy to maintain and to use.
In addition, they cut operating costs by some 60 percent on account of the reduced fuel consumption and lower purchase price for kerosene and diesel. Also the declining availability of aviation gasoline (avgas) worldwide is leading to the increased popularity of Centurion engines, which, by contrast, run on standard aviation fuel: kerosene. "In Turkey, the availability of avgas is only guaranteed in Istanbul, whereas at smaller airports, avgas has to be ordered three or four days in advance. Kerosene, on the other hand, is available all the time at all the airports", said Wolfgang Biereth, professional pilot and employee Sales & Service, of Thielert Aircraft Engines GmbH.
Consequently, the kerosene piston aircraft engines are purchased above all for flight schools such as in the case of Turkish Airlines, who wish to benefit from the availability and the low costs of the fuel. As such, Turkish Airlines belongs to a group of major aviation schools such as American Flyers in the U.S., EPAG – Ecole de Pilotage Amaury de la Grange in France, Cabair in Great Britain, Flight Training Adelaide in Australia, CTC Aviation Group in New Zealand and Atlantic Flight Training in Great Britain, who have opted for the state-of-the-art diesel technology of a Centurion piston aircraft engine. Typical training aircraft with Centurions are Cessna 172, Piper PA28, Diamond DA40 and DA42.
